The Island Life is not for Me

I remember sitting at my desk job and telling Kiel we should move away and just live on an island and sell coconuts. Well, I take that back. <haha>

We've be in Ao Nang, Krabi for the past few days and it's well, a little crabby. The weather's been overcast and rainy with a few random spurts of sunshine, but we've mostly found ourselves getting caught in a drizzle or just staying indoors.

Yesterday we hopped on a ferry to go to Phi Phi Island but we didn't even make it to the island!

I was a little nervous about the boat ride since I suffer from motion sickness (I've already tried those wrist bands and dramamine in the past), but supposedly the sea is usually calm so I thought I would be okay. However we experienced a very rocky, windy and miserable ride.

There we were sitting on the lower level of a hot, little old ferry boat; rocking back and forth, up and down; massive waves are crashing into the boat; I'm getting sweaty and then I begin to dry heave; the guy next to me is violently puking in a bag; I start throwing up; the lady behind me is throwing up; and suddenly, we're surrounded by a bunch of sweaty Asians (we're genetically more susceptible to motion sickness) vomiting in pink plastic bags and making awful retching sounds like zombies from The Walking Dead.

Because of the strong waves and one woman's panic attack, the crew decided to turn the boat around and head back to where we started. It was supposed to take 2 hours to get from Ao Nang to Phi Phi and we were on the boat for 2 hours going from Ao Nang back to Ao Nang. Doesn't seem right...

After we landed back at Ao Nang pier (thank Goodness!) we had the option to either take a ferry from a different pier and at a later time, or just cancel the trip and get a refund. We obviously chose the latter.

The only way to see the Thai islands is by boat, but unfortunately due to the weather and my sea sickness, it won't be happening for us. And while I can't predict the weather, if I had realized the whole navigating around the island thing sooner, I may have chosen to spend less time in Thailand. Oh well.

Besides all that, back on our first night here we ate an amazing Indian meal that even Kiel, who dislikes Indian food, really enjoyed. We also had a nice one hour couples Thai massage for only $8 USD/per person, which is crazy because I was/am okay with paying my favorite masseuse back home $100/hr!

We ate at a steak restaurant called Carnivore last night which of course Kiel indulged in. I happily went back to my veggie ways today.

This afternoon we hung by the pool for a bit and I did a little shopping/perusing up and down the beach front. We had a tasty Thai dinner at a restaurant next door to our resort, but by now I am a bit over Thai food.

An interesting tidbit: We've come across several Thai people who think "The United States" and "America" are two separate countries/places. After we explain it to them, they chuckle and then understand the difference, or rather, that there's no difference. Same Same.

So the island life...I just don't think it's for me. Don't get me wrong, if I were sitting at a desk right now doing the 9-5 thing, I would be dreaming of a tropical island getaway. So maybe I'm just feeling a little bored and itching to contribute in some way. Maybe the grass is always greener. Or perhaps we don't fully understand what we yearn for until it's simply what we leave behind in the comforts at home.
