I'm Going to Kansas City Baby

Thursday was our 8+ hour drive from Colorado to Missouri. We forgot about the hour time zone change and encountered about five hours of rain driving through the vast expanse of nothingness and wind turbines that is Kansas. We wondered what people do in these parts of the country...

After finishing the S-Town Podcast (which we really enjoyed), we finally made it to Kansas City tired, hungry and a bit disconcerted about our hotel and it's location. A word to the wise: no matter how hangry you are, do not take the advice of the lady at the Days Inn front desk and go to Applebee's for a meal.

The next morning (today) we started our day with doughnuts and coffee from Doughnut Lounge. The place was cute but to be completely honest, Cider Belly in Albany is 10x better! (We may be a bit biased as we had Cider Belly doughnuts at our wedding).

We ventured downtown, only to realize that there wasn't much to Kansas City's downtown. Were we missing something?! We ended up going to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, which was the perfect cloudy day activity with a nice selection of Asian, Contemporary, and Fine Art to name a few, and not to mention, free!

After the museum we had an early dinner at Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que (technically it's in Kansas at a gas station), and it was absolutely fantastic. Alyssa got their Z-man Sandwich (beef brisket, smoked provolone cheese, crispy onion rings) and Kiel got the "Hog-o-maniac" (a sampler of their ribs, pulled pork, and sausage with a side Texas Toast, baked beans and creamy cole slaw) 🐷 . We were in BBQ heaven.

We ended the night at the Kansas City Royals game. Kauffman Stadium was great and Royals fans seemed a bit more energetic than those at the Rockies game. Now we're hoping the rain holds off for tomorrow; we're heading to St. Louis in the morning for the Cardinals game. Until then, we'll be dreaming of more BBQ.

Monet's Water Lillies. One panel of the triptych.

Because of our baseball theme...

Andy Warhol,  Baseball 1962. Warhol's first
photo-silkscreened painting, celebrating the American
institution of baseball and incorporates
NewYork Yankee Roger Maris.

Radcliff Bailey, Mound Magician 1997. Symbolizes the Negro League Baseball with references to African countries and southern American cities, patterns associated with Bailet's grandfather's workshop, and Voodoo symbols.

Jain Shrine from India

Magdalena Abakanowicz, Standing Figures 1994-98. The haunting power of these headless, standing figures invites
many interpretations, and the artist welcomes this approach. We'll call it Alyssa's Victims 😂
The view from the Rozelle Balcony
Joe's Kansas City BBQ - a must have!
